This is Andrew’s favorite picture, and it was taken in 1998. The Scout troop had an overnight outing onboard the USS Pampanito at Fisherman’s wharf. After the submarine’s visitors left, the Scouts were allowed into areas the general public isn’t. They got to climb on the deck guns, and sweep the searchlight over San Francisco Bay. They spent most of the night watching submarine movies in the torpedo room.
Last year, I went back to the Pampanito to visit some friends, and I took Andrew with me. I introduced him to one of my friends, and he whipped out his wallet and said, “let me show you something.” He proudly displayed a smaller picture that he had in his wallet. Later, on a submarine veteran’s bulletin board, I read about what a great kid I had. I thought so, too.
