Andrew was killed on Willow Pass Road while returning from a Marching Band Competition. He was 16 and a junior at Clayton Valley High School. Andrew was alone in the car at the time of his death. The driver of the other car was transported to the hospital with unsubstantiated injuries and was found to be under the influence of alcohol.
Andrew enjoyed mountain biking, swimming, bowling, racquetball, and playing guitar. He was a member of Clayton Valley’s Marching Band, the Good Shepherd Lutheran Youth Group, and a drummer in a garage band. Andrew also volunteered at soup kitchens and helped build a house in Mexico in a program for impoverished villages.
He is survived by his beloved parents, Dianne and Lawrence Smith; brother Daniel; and sisters Christie Dianne and Stephanie; Grandparents LeRoy Gebhardt, Barbara Moon, and Edice and Clara Smith; and close friends Tony Sommers, Paul Brennen, Robert Traxler, and Tegan Pyne.
His parents report that Andrew loves to cook and planned to attend the San Francisco School of Culinary Arts to become a world-class chef. Personable, friendly, compassionate, thoughtful and caring, Andrew will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
Services for Andrew will be held at Clayton Valley High on April 17, 2002.
